I want to mostly capture myself in outdoor scenes, particularly ones associated with rock climbing. Some of my favorite ideas, and favorites of people I got feedback from in lab revolve around this. I'm actually planning a trip next weekend to do a long climb in the Black Canyon, and it would provide the perfect backdrop for the 'selfie on a cliff face' idea that I had. Another idea I'll definitely pursue is setting up a tripod and getting a long exposure photo of myself with stars in the background. I think will turn out really cool. Also I want to learn how to use some studio lights, so I want to use last photo to explore that. I was thinking of seeing up some kind of backlight, and maybe shooting photos that crop out half of my face, like some of the examples below.
For my subject, I want to photograph my brother Will. I discussed a few other people I could photograph with my lab section, but ultimately I think I could take the most visually interesting and meaningful photos with him because I know him and his story so well. Will is also a prolific rock climber and skier, and last year he had a very serious ski crash. He shattered his L1 vertebrae and was millimeters away from being paralyzed from the waist down. Now he has made a full recovery, but the injury has become a part of who he is. I think that photos highlighting his scar, along with photos of him out climbing again will make for a powerful set of images.
Below are all of my ideas for this project, and images from the internet as examples:
