Project Milestones

Abiogenesis is a series of 3d printed hanging lights created using generative design techniques inspired by natural phenomena. Through this medium, it explores the relationship between nature, engineering, and art.

I plan to make hanging pendant lights that are designed using generative or algorithmic methods inspired by natural processes. Addressable RGB LEDs will be used for the lighting, and they will display animations that are also inspired by natural processes .

For the physical design of the light fixtures, I want to use generative algorithms to create structures that look and feel like living things, as if they were grown, not built. I’ll accomplish this by creating constraints in simulated physical systems, then allowing the simulations to play forward: effectively “growing” these structures. The experiments below are from grasshopper sketches I have already made, and they produce different results each time they are run. I plan to use these as well as develop other forms based on similar organic or natural phenomena.

User Testing Interviews

With my final design, I was able to reach out to experts for user testing. I had a great conversation with David Craige, a lighting...
